Party Meeting Rooms, Canberra ACT

Garry Grey faced the remaining members of his political party, and spoke in reassuring tones.

‘Look, we still have the numbers; we don’t need to make radical changes to our aims at the moment. The opposition has no idea what’s going on. As far as they’re concerned, the PM has jumped ship. We keep tight lipped about her and soldier on.’

‘What if she has in fact been kidnapped? Is there any truth in the rumour about this mystery bloke John Kelly resurfacing?’ one of the ministers asked.

‘Kelly is yesterday’s news. Procedures have been put in place to make it impossible for him or his offsiders to resurface. We have to remain focused and united in this. Back away and we tumble.’

‘So you’ll wave a magic wand and it’ll all go away?’ came a mocking question from the far end of the table.

‘No, but our American friends will take care of it. They’ll have to if they want to retain Indigo.’

Someone at the table muttered, just loud enough that others could hear, ‘Some of us predicted this’d happen if we got involved with the Yanks. We’re no better than they are. We’ll be just as guilty as them if this goes on.’

‘You got something to say, Mister Brown?’ challenged Grey, revelling in his newfound power.

‘Just this. As of now, I don’t want anything to do with this bizarre plan of yours. You’re all fucking mad.’

Brown stood up.

‘Last chance people, if you wish to walk away.’

No one stood.

‘Be it on your heads then.’

He walked from the room, feeling free for the first time in his life. From now on, he would say and do as he pleased.
